The
Reserve
spans
a
wide
area
encompassing
various
‘life
zones’
extremely
rich
in
biodiversity.
Perpetual
snows
combined
with
the
climate
of
a
tropical
rainforest
make
this
area
truly
unique,
not
to
mention
the
volcano,
surrounded
by
numerous
lakes
which
extend
as
far
as
the
Amazonian
plain.
However,
probably
the
most
astounding
ecological
aspect
of
this
Reserve
is
its
function
as
an
‘ecological
corridor’,
which
runs
between
the
Cayambe-Coca
Ecological
Reserve
and
the
Sumaco
Napo-Galeras
National
Park,
creating
one
of
the
ten
hotspots
of
biodiversity
that
exist
in
various
places
around
the
world.
