Flujo de Lava de Antisanilla (The Antisanilla Lava Flow)

Antisanilla is a lava flow which erupted, not from the crater of Antisana as one would expect, but from the earth itself. The lava hardened to create unique and peculiar-looking wave-like formations in the earth, which are worth taking the time to admire. Near to the River Isco, where the lava flow also reached, lie the dark-green Secas lakes, which have an excellent reputation for fishing.

Barrancos del Isco

Until recently a series of walls existed here made from rocks, which provided the Andean condors with a place to build nests and lay eggs. Nowadays, however, this species is rarely seen here. Nevertheless, the striking chiquiragua forests, where it is possible to observe the stunningly exceptional Ecuadorian colibri or humming bird, also constitute a popular tourist attraction in the area.

Laguna Muerte Pungu (Lake Muerte Pungu)

The lake is situated in the dip of the elevation of the same name; whose highest peak is El Predicador. Like the majority of lakes in this area, it is excellent for fishing. Access to the lake, which is possible by car, is via the village of Santa Rosa close to Pintag.

Laguna Santa Lucia or Mauca Machay

This is also an excellent site for fishing and camping. The surrounding landscape is one of beauty, as can be expected at altitude. The lake can be reached by taking a branch road just off from the main road.

El Tambo

The main attractions in this area are the beautiful waterfalls and cloud forest-covered ravines, which extend almost the entire route to the communities of Cosaga and Baeza. However, the main attraction for visitors to the area is the abundance of natural hot springs, which are said to have healing properties. Private tourist infrastructure has been implemented here first and foremost to exploit this natural resource. There is also a trail, popular amongst trekkers and thrill seekers, which, after a strenuous and exhausting hike, leads to the Cotopaxi National Park .

Laguna Micacocha and Volcano Antisana

As the biggest lake in the region, Micacocha extends right the way to the foot of the volcano, which practically rises from the jungle, providing the visitor with an absolutely unforgettable view. It’s quite amazing just how many surrounding sites there are in which past volcanic activity is evident in the form of lava flows. Such volcanic activity shaped the landscape and formed the majority of lakes that exist here, including Lake de la Mica itself.

Cordillera de Guacamayos

This particular section of the Andes backbone, together with the lower areas of the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve and the Napo-Galeras National Park , comprise an extremely rich and important biological corridor extending over the eastern peaks of the Andes backbone.

Cuevas de Jumandi (Jumandi Caves)

This tourist site is known for the private recreational facilities that have been installed here. Located in dense forest, which is gradually converting itself into jungle, the visitor has the opportunity to observe nature in its purest form.

Bosque Protector Sierra Azul

Characterised by the biodiversity typical of the area, this forest is maintained by private interests. Ecotourism projects and various conservational activities are being realised in the area. It is recommended to plan your visit in advance in Quito .
