The
most
eye-catching
fauna
is
that
which
is
typical
of
the
paramo
,
principally
in
the
form
of
small
deer,
wolves,
rabbits
and
rats.
Wild
llamas,
which
are
considered
in
great
danger
of
extinction,
are
also
seen
sporadically
occasioning
the
area.
Nevertheless,
the
South-American
Camelids
Reintroduction
Program,
which
has
been
implemented
in
Chimborazo
,
has
served
to
reverse
the
decreasing
population
numbers.
Bird
species
include
the
extraordinary
Andean
condor,
which
is
not
as
frequently
seen
nowadays,
and
the
humming
bird
(known
as
the
Star
of
Ecuador),
which
is
now
also
difficult
to
find.
The
carunculated
caracara
is
a
much
more
frequently
observed
bird,
which,
according
to
superstition,
depending
on
its
flight
represents
either
a
good
or
bad
omen
for
the
area’s
communities.
The
carunculated
caracara
is
also
represented
in
all
indigenous
parties
and
festivals.
