Llangantes
mountain
range
will
always
be
remembered
in
connection
with
General
Ruminahui
and
his
heroic
efforts
to
defend
the
treasures
of
the
Kingdom
of
Quito
.
Here,
the
legend
tells
the
story
of
a
struggle
of
a
heroic
historical
figure
and
his
achievements.
This
legendary
mountainous
region,
from
which
the
park
has
taken
its
name,
encompasses
one
of
the
oldest
and
most
strategic
communication
and
commercial
routes
that
has
existed
between
the
inter-Andean
valleys
and
the
Amazonian
region.
Archaeological
evidence
suggests
that
the
opening
of
Pastaza
constituted
a
cultural
transit
route
between
the
villages
within
the
parks
borders.
The
name
‘Llangantes’
means
‘beautiful
hill’
in
Quichua.
Past
inhabitants
gave
this
name
to
the
village
possibly
due
to
the
beautiful
glowing
appearance
of
the
peaks
in
the
afternoon
sun.
Perhaps
‘unknown’
and
‘mysterious’
are
two
words
to
best
describe
the
zone.
The
area
is
well-known
for
the
legend
of
the
hidden
Inca
treasure
buried
high
in
the
mountains
and
the
several
failed
attempts
to
find
it.
