Despite
the
fact
that
extensive
research
is
yet
to
be
carried
out
in
the
area,
the
RAP
(Quick
Biological
Evaluation
Program),
a
project
set
up
by
Conservation
International,
has
identified
the
most
important
characteristics
and
species
of
the
forest.
A
high
level
of
humidity,
above
the
levels
of
similar
forests,
with
a
large
number
of
epiphytes
and
climbing
plants
and
a
diverse
range
of
birdlife
such
as
toucans
and
parrots,
of
which
more
than
ten
per
cent
are
classified
as
endemic,
were
detected
by
the
first
research
study
carried
out
in
the
area.
Various
other
characteristics
unique
to
the
zone
have
also
called
the
attention
of
scientists
from
all
corners
of
the
world.
Given
its
geographical
location,
many
consider
this
region
to
be
a
southern
extension
of
the
Choco
ecosystem
in
Colombia
.
A
correlation
between
several
species
of
the
two
regions
does
exist,
particularly
with
regards
to
amphibians
and
reptiles.
However,
other
particular
biophysical
characteristics
suggest
that
this
area
is
not
simply
an
extension
of
its
Colombian
neighbour.
