Tucked
away in the
'El Mirador'
neighbourhood,
the recreational
park is a
small tourist
attraction
filled with
plants typical
of the region
– perfect
for nature
lovers or
for those
who just want
to escape
from the hustle
and bustle
of the city.
The park also
features a
museum containing
archaeological
remains from
ancient regional
cultures such
as the Upano
culture that
dates back
to around
2570 BC until
940 AD.
The first
room showcases
artefacts
from the Upano
culture such
as axes, petrified
shells, stones
used for cooking
and bows.
In the second
room there
are scale
models representing
a Huapula
ceremonial
site and various
symbolic rituals
in addition
to photos
of the site.
Moving on
through the
museum you'll
find evidence
of the Shuar
culture, including
shrunken heads
- the prize
of a battle
when enemies
are killed.
The heads
of enemies
are cut off,
the brains
taken out
and the head
treated with
ash. The final
room displays
photographs
of Macas and
its people.
Next
to the museum
is the Municipal
Library.
