Small
town Sucua
is on the
Macas-Zamora
road.
Its a major
centre for
Shuar
Indians [also
known as Jivaro]
who are best
known for
their erstwhile
habit of cutting
off and shrinking
the heads
of their enemies.
You can get
information
about Shuar
culture and
shop for handicrafts,
but because
of missionaries
you won't
see any tsantsas
[shrunken
heads] in
the town's
Shuar
Cultural Centre.
Places
to visit
The
best place
to see tsantsas
is
at the Municipal
Museum
in Guayaquil.
Sucua is also
the location
of the headquarters
of the Shuar
Federation,
from whom
you have to
obtain permission
to visit Shuar
villages.
The main market
day
is on Sunday.
While you’re
here take
the cable
car across
the river
Namangoza
and
enjoy riverside
walks, swimming
and rapids.
There is little
accommodation
in Sucua so
most visitors
stay 20km
away in the
jungle town
of Macas,
from where
buses
leave
frequently
from morning
to early evening.
