NATURAL
RESOURCES
The
fertile terrains
produce a
great diversity
of products
including: corn, plantain,
yucca, banana,
beans, potatoes,
vegetables,
coffee, cocoa,
tobacco and
various types
of fruits.
Cattle
farming also
occupies a
predominant
spot in agricultural
activity.
The bovine
population
is relatively
large. There
are also silver
and gold mines
in several
areas around
the province.
INDUSTRY
AND COMMERCE
The
access routes
connecting
the province
with the sierra
and coastal
areas have
made the transportation
of goods and
products rather
difficult.
The Puyo-Macas
highway has
been improved
to an extent,
but there
are still
many other
roads in bad
condition
that require
work, the
Guamote-Macas
route in particular.
The Mendez
Hualaquiza
route is located
towards the
south of the
province,
which facilitates
the transportation
of goods to
and from the
province of
Azuay. The
rivers improve
transportation
between the
villages and
towns. Runways
have also
been constructed
in some cantons
and along
border areas.
