The
province of
Orellana , the
sixth region
in the Amazon,
was created
on 20 th July
1998 as the
territory of
Napo was divided.
The province’s
capital is Francisco
de Orellana.
The
idea to create
the new province
was first conceived
in 1987 by Alejandro
Labaca. 11 years
after this idea
became a reality
taking into
consideration
a number of
social, economic
and political
factors. The
new province
was originally
going to be
given the name
Amazonas, however,
this was met
with some protest
by Peru , the
name Orellana
was then decided
upon. The province
accommodates
four cantons
and extends
for 22,000 km
squared with
a population
of 65,000. Francisco
Orellana and
Joya de los
Sachas are characterised
by their oil-driven
economies.
