Orellana
is a newly
created province,
founded just
a few years
ago in 1998.
Territory
was taken
from Napo
to found the
province.
The government
took into
consideration
the following
reasons:
The
territory
now constituting
Orellana lacked
road and communication
infrastructure
consequently
hindering
the development
of the area.
The
creation of
political
and administrative
structures
in the area
would benefit
the region
due to its
position as
a bordering
area.
The
area’s oil
resources
should be
under stricter
state control.
The
cantons of
Orellana,
La Joya de
la Sachas
, Aguarico
and Loreto
expressed
a desire to
form their
own province
together based
on the social,
economic and
political
factors they
have in common.
