 PASTAZA PROVINCE / ECONOMY

NATURAL RESOURCES

A small area of the province is dedicated to the cultivation of cane, plantain, bananas, yucca, tobacco, fruits, tea and corn.Cattle farming is on the increase for the production of meat and dairy products. Fish and in some cases gold are found in the province’s rivers. Natural resources include vegetables and various types of wood. Petroleum company Shell began to exploit the area for oil in the 1940s; the region is currently one of elevated economic importance within the country. Tourism is also rapidly developing in the province, with the population increasing and the infrastructure improving in Pastaza.

INDUSTRY and COMMERCE

Plan Pastaza was created for the purpose of forest exploitation and agricultural development in the region, mainly constituting the industrial production of tea. Commercial movement is still relatively small and is closely related to agricultural production, cattle farming, wood processing, tea, liquors and artisan goods such as knitted articles, musical instruments and traditional weapons.
