NATURAL
RESOURCES
A
small area
of the province
is dedicated
to the cultivation
of cane, plantain,
bananas, yucca,
tobacco, fruits,
tea and corn.Cattle
farming is
on the increase
for the production
of meat and
dairy products.
Fish and in
some cases
gold are found
in the province’s
rivers. Natural
resources
include vegetables
and various
types of wood.
Petroleum
company Shell
began to exploit
the area for
oil in the
1940s; the
region is
currently
one of elevated
economic importance
within the
country. Tourism
is also rapidly
developing
in the province,
with the population
increasing
and the infrastructure
improving
in Pastaza.
INDUSTRY
and COMMERCE
Plan
Pastaza was
created for
the purpose
of forest
exploitation
and agricultural
development
in the region,
mainly constituting
the industrial
production
of tea. Commercial
movement is
still relatively
small and
is closely
related to
agricultural
production,
cattle farming,
wood processing,
tea, liquors
and artisan
goods such
as knitted
articles,
musical instruments
and traditional
weapons.
