Geography
Sucumbios
is the southernmost
province of
the Amazon
region, bordering
Colombia .
The main part
of the terrain
is jungle
plain rich
in flora and
fauna. The
most important
elevations
are Volcano
Reventador
( 3562 metres
), a volcano
which has
shown activity
since 1933
located on
the border
with the province
of Napo ,
and Sur Pax
( 2341 metres
) located
towards the
north east.
Climate
The
climate is
hot throughout
the entire
province.
Temperatures
average 24
degrees centigrade
and rainfall
is intense,
reaching between
3000 and 4000
mm . Humidity
levels are
high. October
and March
have least
rainfall;
from March
to September
rainfall is
heavy (winter).
The
landscape
is one of
extreme beauty,
for this reason
the government
has converted
many sights
into fauna
reserves (such
as Cuyabeno),
which is the
country’s
largest measuring
some 600 hectares
. Cayambe-Coca
Reserve extends
for 403,103
hectares .
Limoncocha
Biological
Reserve (
4613 hectares
) was founded
in 1985. It
houses many
flora and
fauna species:
more than
347 bird species
have been
identified
in the area.
Rivers
The
principle
rivers are:
San
Miguel, towards
the north,
Putumayo towards
the north
east, main
river Aguarico
which can
be navigated
for the most
part, Cofanes,
Cuyabeno and
Guepi. Towards
the south
rivers Coca
and Napo ,
and also the
15 lakes of
Cuyabeno.
