The
province of
Zamora has
fertile soils;
the main agricultural
products are:
coffee, corn,
cocoa, yucca,
plantain,
banana and
tropical fruits
such as mandarins,
lemons, pineapples
and papayas.
Cattle is
also reared
in the area,
the bovine
population
stands at
around 200
thousand.
Forest reserves
are immense
with a variety
of different
tree species.
There are
also gold
deposits,
the most important
being in Zumba
and Nambija.
In contrast
to other provinces
in the area,
oil extraction
is not one
of the area’s
principle
economic activities.
Tourism is
on the increase,
however, it
is hindered
due to the
communication
routes and
distances
required to
travel.
Most
commercial
activity is
negotiated
with Loja,
which is located
at 64km from
Zamora, also
with Cuenca,
Guayaquil
and Peru.
