 EL ANGEL

El Angel is a small and peaceful village located in San Gabriel, some twenty kilometres along the old Panamericana road. It's home to around 5,700 inhabitants who live at an altitude of 3,000m.

The village is surrounded by highland vegetation including the infamous Frailejones, which can grow up to 2 metres in height. Since 1992 the area has been protected by El Angel Ecological Reserve [Reserva Ecológica El Angel], covering approximately 16,000 hectares of amazing páramo. Andean Condors have also been seen around this area - one of the few places in the country where you can appreciate this magnificent endemic Andean treasure. Tours to El Angel Reserve are available in the village through Fundación El Angel. The foundation also provides information about the reserve at their base on José Grijalva 04-26.

Getting there

A frequent bus service to Quito vía lbarra [US$2.70*, 4 hours]. To Mira and Tulcán [US$1,00*; every hour].
