El
Angel is a
small and
peaceful village
located in
San Gabriel,
some twenty
kilometres
along the
old Panamericana
road. It's
home to around
5,700 inhabitants
who live at
an altitude
of 3,000m.
The village
is surrounded
by highland
vegetation
including
the infamous
Frailejones,
which can
grow up to
2 metres in
height. Since
1992 the area
has been protected
by El
Angel Ecological
Reserve
[Reserva
Ecológica
El Angel],
covering approximately
16,000 hectares
of amazing
páramo.
Andean
Condors
have also
been seen
around this
area - one
of the few
places in
the country
where you
can appreciate
this magnificent
endemic Andean
treasure.

in the village
through Fundación
El Angel.
