About
three kilometres
[almost
two miles]
North of Peguche
is the weaving
community
of Iluman.
They make
of tapestries,
felt hats
and ponchos.
The village
is also famous
for its traditional
healers who
drive away
sickness using
ancient rituals
and their
vast knowledge
of local herbs
and plants,
some of which
are now used
in Western
medicine.
People from
all over the
Sierra come
to see the
healers of
Iluman. One
Spanish speaking
tourist came
away from
a healing
session with
her clothes
covered in
spittle and
the coloured
juices of
herbs, but
cured of her
ailment.
In the northeast
corner of
the village
plaza, demonstrations
of pre-Inca
backstrap
loom weaving
take place
at the Inti
Chumbi Co-op,
on the second
floor of Conteron
family's house.
Weavings are
on sale.
