The road descends to Las Juntas from Pelileo at the intersection of the Chambo and Patate rivers that form the Pastaza river. A kilometre to the east is the road from Riobamba. At this intersection, known as 'los pajaros' there's a big sculpture of a toucan and a macaw. The road from Ambato then continues through the lower gradients of the Tungurahua volcano to Banos [some 20 km from Pelileo].
